Radiating patriotism

Muslims in India are always suspected for their patriotism. I remember, few years ago a poll by one national daily showed 1% more Muslim loving their country than Hindus. In my own experience I find Indian Muslims to feel very strongly about their country and they don't feel that there is anything strange about this feeling.

Radiance viewsweekly is the magazine published by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. On the occasion of Republic Day of India, this is what they wrote in their editorial of 1-7 Feb 2009 issue.

Let us not ask for a while, what our country has not done for us but think what we can do to (for??) our country and our fellow citizens. Islam presents a very high ideal of thought and action before the Muslims to work for uplifting humanity. Let this be the source of inspiration for us to rededicate ourselves for building a strong nation on the firm foundation of belief in God, universally accepted moral principles stressed by all religions and work ceaselessly to achieve this. Heart within, God overhead and hand in hand let us march forward.


This editorial stressing that we work on moral values acceptable by all and make India a strong nation should put to rest all speculations about where loyalties of Muslims of India lies.

Spend from your wealth

Multiple times in Quran there is mention of spending from the wealth. Maulana Azad's translation of Surah Baqrah: 254 - O Muslims, Do not spend all that We have bestowed on you exclusively on the promotion of your own personal comforts. Spend something out of it in the way of God also before the transitory life given to you comes to an end, and the coming Day stares you hard in the face. On that day, there will be no give and take to obtain salvation; and neither friendship nor intercession will avail. On that day, the righteous deeds alone which one has done here can effect salvation. And remember, those who refuse to believe in this will certainly bring ruin upon themselves.

Piety and activism

Conventional thinking is that piety is becoming gosha-nasheen, removing yourself completely from the world and becoming one with Allah. This verse in Surah Baqarah explains piety: "It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces to the East and the West; but righteous is he who believeth in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Scripture and the prophets; and giveth wealth, for love of Him, to kinsfolk and to orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and to those who ask, and to set slaves free; and observeth proper worship and payeth the poor-due.
