Hudood

Hudood is an Islamic terminology that is referred to punishment that is fixed by Allah. Four types of crimes are covered by "hudood"- 1. theft 2. character assassination of a woman 3. drinking alcohol and 4. fornication.
[Maariful Quran: vol. 6 : pages 341-342]

"In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
(Here is) a surah which We have revealed and enjoined, and wherein We have revealed plain tokens, that haply ye may take heed. (1) The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment. (2)"

Surah An-Noor: verses 1 & 2

The idea of hundred lashes is not to kill them or inflict severe wounds but to embarrass them so that they don't commit the same mistake again. A party should witness so that others can learn from it.

Elsewhere in Quran, there is a requirement of four witnesses to prove adultery and of course if a witness's statement is rejected then he or she will also face hudood for false witness.

Stoning is not mentioned anywhere in Quran but apparently some ahadith mention it, this I need to investigate.
