I am a Muslim, I am a consumer

Nothing wrong with being a consumer, we all are. But, I thought Islam came to dictate a moderate life! But now that moderate life seems extreme in the era of extremes. America and the world is facing economic and ecological problems because of the unhindered consumption by the American consumer.

Muslims in America always tried to fit in, projecting themselves as one of the three great world religions. Showing that they are just like any other American in their profession and aspirations ( may ads and campaigns have ran along those lines). They have demanded Ramadan cards to be sold by Hallmark and others. They have also demanded halal fast food chains and in some places KFC and others do provide halal meat (though you may have to call them in advance).

In a rush to become normal, we want to do everything a "normal" American do, as long as it is "halalafied." But companies and advertisers are still confused about Muslims so to help them sell their goodies to a growing and rich Muslim market a conference is planned later this month.

"American Muslim Consumer Conference" will sell Muslim consumers to the corporate america so that they can sell their wares to the Muslims.

The objective of the conference is to create an awareness of the Muslim consumer, their buying power so that we can gain some visibility and presence in mainstream media, the advertising industry and in-turn influence Companies and Muslim Entrepreneurs develop products and services for Muslims, based on Islamic principles.

So this it, this is what Islam came to the world for? Where is the alternate vision for the world? What is our economic model based on justice and fairness? where is our labor policy? what are we doing for the environment? what are we doing for human rights for people who are not Muslims? What kind of future we see? Are we providing a different way of solving world problem or a vision of the future? Communism and Capitalism has failed people but do we have a working model of Islamic worldview?

Do we care when Muslims are on the wrong side of events? Do we try to justify their action or see media bias? There are endless questions in my mind.

So to become normal we have to be just like others with some limits e.g. the conference will be breaking around prayer times.

It is a thought provoking piece kaashif sahab. I think it is high time when we start looking inwards not just for being on the wrong side of the events but also for the guidance Islam promises to give. Yes we need an islamic model - the one which includes us all irrespective of who we are. It is not just us but the entire world which needs it.
