Urdu Science : May 2009
Urdu monthly Science is published by Dr. Aslam Parvaiz since 1994. It has been published since then on a regular basis, a rarity in the Urdu world.
Dr. Parvaiz is the Principal of Zakir Hussain College of Delhi University. He should be given credit for consistently serving Urdu, Muslims, & science.
It is a quality magazine and to find enough material on science in Urdu to put together a magazine every month must be a huge challenge. I have seen even difficult scientific terms translated in Urdu but still simple enough that you can guess what they mean. I am not sure if his magazine uses an Urdu dictionary of scientific terms.
In the May issue cover story is 'Aayat-e-kaynaat' or 'Signs of the Creation' by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saud Alam Qasmi of Aligarh. His article is long but brilliant and justifies him attaching three honorific with his name (prof, dr, and qasmi).
He quotes Surah Fatir 27:28 and points out that Aalim here will mean only those who knowledge of the world of sciences not graduates of madrasa otherwise these verses will not make any sense.
If this was not enough he quotes part of Surah Luqman: 20
and I quote him here:
کھلی نعمتوں سی مراد آنکھ سے نظر آنے والی اشیا ہیں اور چھپی نعمتوں سے مراد وہ اشیا ہیں جن تک غور و فکر کی ذریعہ رسائی ہوتی ہے. تفکر کائنات کا نظری پہلو اے اور تسخیر اس کا عملی پہلو، ایک مشاہدہ ہے اور دوسرا انفاذ ، ایک نظریہ ہے اور دوسرا نتیجہ اور یہی سائنسی ترقیات اور ایجادات کی اساس ہے .
مشرکانہ ذہن مظاہر کائنات کے آگے عقیدت سے ہاتھ جوڑے کھڑا رہتا ہے جب کہ مومنانہ ذہن الله کے حکم سے ان مظاھر پر ہاتھ ڈالتا ہے اور ان کو اپنے استعمال میں لاتا ہے.
تفکر کے لئے ذہنی یکسوئی اور فکری بلندی کی ضرورت ہے جب کہ تسخیر کے لئے وسائل کی فراہمی اور مالی سرپرستی کی ضرورت ہے. ان دونوں قوتوں کے اجتماع سے تعمیر و ترقی کا خواب شرمندہ تعبیر ہو سکتا اے.

سورة فَاطِر
کیا تم نے نہیں دیکھا کہ خدا نے آسمان سے مینہ برسایا۔ تو ہم نے اس سے طرح طرح کے رنگوں کے میوے پیدا کئے۔ اور پہاڑوں میں سفید اور سرخ رنگوں کے قطعات ہیں اور (بعض) کالے سیاہ ہیں (۲۷) انسانوں اور جانوروں اور چارپایوں کے بھی کئی طرح کے رنگ ہیں۔ خدا سے تو اس کے بندوں میں سے وہی ڈرتے ہیں جو صاحب علم ہیں۔ بےشک خدا غالب (اور) بخشنے والا ہے

Urdu and Scienec??? Why even attempt? Rather do creative stuff like writing a poem in Urdu.
Listen, if our aim is to promote science education among our children, develop a nice English maagzine, get our upcoming youngsters write about experiemnets or new developments, make it intersting for the youngsters. Or, with all the other issues facing us, is there even a need?
Yes, there is a big need to popularize science. Dr. Parvaiz is making the argument for a long time that scintific thinking and experimentation is not against the teachings of Quran.
His magazine is ready by Madrasa students and a new generation will be more aware of the new development that is happening in the world of science.
